SSDN Conscious Metadata Working Session

Attention Archivists, Catalogers, Metadata Librarians, Digital Projects Librarians, and anyone else who works on aspects of description at your library!
SSDN, in conjunction with the Roux Library at Florida Southern College, will be hosting a day-long working session to help prepare your team for conscious and reparative description work. We encourage you to bring up to four members of your library to participate in this working session. Groups will discuss workflows, opportunities, challenges, and priorities for your projects and you will be connected with other professionals doing similar work. Attendees will receive an honorarium for their attendance.

Exploring community-driven archives as a path toward institutional transformation

Chaitra Powell, the curator of the Southern Historical Collection, will use examples from UNC Libraries’ Mellon-Funded, Community Driven Archives grant (2017-2021) to reflect on the agency of librarians/archivists to challenge and transform their institutions from the inside out. Workshop themes include, community epistemologies (ways of knowing), community empowerment, ownership, power dynamics, relationship building, and resource distribution. The session will be hybrid and include a 45-minute Zoom presentation, followed by a 30-minute Q&A, and a one-hour interactive discussion session with in-person participants. A travel honorarium is available for in-person attendees in the amount of $115.

For FY2021-22, 70% of the total costs for the SSDN Conscious Metadata Training program ($33,289) is supported by federal money; 30% of this program ($14,345) is supported by local money. The total budget of the project is $47,634.
